Dance with idiosynCrazy productions

idiosynCrazy productions will be holding an open performance workshop on Saturday, April 28.  The workshop will be centered around exploring performance ideas that we are using in our latest work, Private Places (premiering this year in the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival).  With original inspiration from service industry culture and J-Sette/bucking, Private Places examines notions of order: how we order, categorize, groom, distinguish, fix, and distort ourselves to achieve certain standards of presentation.  The work continues to be driven by ideas about service industry culture, and how industry also orders/displays/distinguishes human bodies in particular ways.  Ultimately, we hope the work will be able to encourage reflection upon the question (in its various interpretations): How are we serving ourselves?

The workshop will be led by idiosynCrazy staff (Shannon Murphy, Shavon Norris, Jumatatu Poe).  PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will also be an opportunity for idiosynCrazy staff to look for dancers* to fill some of the roles in Private Places for the premiere in September.  If this is a possibility that interests you, you can find rehearsal dates below.  Some workshop participants will be invited back the next day to explore some material with company members.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
fairly athletic movement (you may want to bring kneepads), venturing into various genres of contemporary dance forms, spoken text and other vocal sounding/singing, exploring quick shifts of emotional/psychological energies, exploring quick shifts of caricatured identities, crazy fun!

WHEN IS IT:
Saturday, April 28, from 10am – 3pm, with a lunch break
(some workshop participants may be invited to a second workshop on Sunday, April 29, from 10am – 3pm)

WHERE IS IT:
Philadelphia Live Arts Brewery
919 North 5th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19123

HOW MUCH:
FREE!

I’M COMING!:
Please send a reservation email to info@idiosynCrazy.org by Friday, April 20th, to reserve a space.  Include your name and address, and a short written statement about how you prefer to present yourself (you can have fun with this…  can be a poem, short story, or just a simple paragraph…  just to get you thinking about it)

* we will be looking to cast dancers for Private Places, directed by Jumatatu Poe.  If interested in being considered, please note this in your reservation email.  You would need to be available for rehearsals in Philadelphia on May 3rd, from May 17th – June 1st, from June 18th – 25th, and from August 13th – September 22nd; also, you would need availability to be in Pittsburgh from December 10 – 15, 2012.  Premiere show dates are still being confirmed, but will be in the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival between September 7 – 22.  Rehearsals are paid at $25/hr.  There will be five premiere performances paid at $250 each.  PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WELCOME ALL AGES, BODY TYPES, AND ABILITIES.  We appreciate and respect diversity.

Scratch Night at Live Arts Brewery tomorrow

Hello folks,

Please come check out Shannon Murphy’s work-in-progress at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival Brewery.  The show begins at 7pm and is FREE!

Shannon says, “I’ve been investigating the horizontal domes in our bodies including the top of the skull, hard/soft pallet and occipital bones, first rib, diaphragm, pelvic floor, tibial plateaus and the soles of the feet. Embodying these domes as mobile, fluctuating structures allowed us to be creative with their relationships.”

See you there!  ALSO, please respond to last week’s WHAT DO YOU THINK?

idioSomatics: Skinsational

Some info on our latest series in idioSomatics.

We told you about this new plan that we have with idioSomatics: we are going to have subtitles for each of the short (4 – 6 week) series that we are offering through idioSomatics from now on.  We started with Shannon Murphy’s idioSomatics: POST-JAZZ (get into the all caps 😉 it was pretty major).  Well, now we are right in the middle of our newest series – idioSomatics: Skinsational.

So, what is Skinsational…?  Skinsational, taught by Jumatatu Poe, is a contemporary dance class in which we will draw heightened awareness to the functions and fashions of our skin.  Jumatatu has been lately drawn to the idea of “infinity in both directions” – those things within us that serve to distinguish us, individuate us and clarify our sense of our material and metaphysical selves; then those things that exist beyond the boundaries of where we end, the environment surrounding us.  Largely, in Skinsational, we examine the role of our skin as a liminal bridge between these two infinities, sending information out into the environment to which we connect, and sending information in to our own “selves.”  And that title?  “Sounds sexy, doesn’t it?”, Jumatatu asks.  And, yes, we will go there, too 😉

Friday mornings from 10am – noon at the Community Education Center.  Come check it out!  Bring your body…
