Shavon Norris reflects again on our Swarthmore project, looking at her experience as a supervisor and outside eye to the project.\u00a0 Coming next week, we will see some video on our One Year Vlog Project that highlights some of the work our 4 idiosynCratz and 9 Swarthmore<\/a> students have been doing since October.<\/em><\/p>\n

It is March, we started in October
\nmentors, mentees, John Cage
\nproduction deadlines, discomfort, newness and April approaching
\ndebates about improv, about what belongs on stage
\nabout how to create a dance, about what dance is
\nthere are challenges
\nconfusion, frustration, understanding, compromise, trust
\nbuttons pushed, toes pointed and bodies moving
\nthere are writing exercises
\nwarm ups that are fun and sweaty
\nthere are insecurities, confidence, change and beauty<\/p>\n

there are 13 bodies\/brains making decisions
\n13 bodies\/brains negotiating preferences, perspectives, aesthetics
\ntrying to make something honest and good
\ntrying to make art
\ntrying to be heard
\ntrying to be seen
\ntrying to make sense
\ntrying to form relationships, friendships, ownership<\/p>\n

this is collaboration to the tenth degree
\na collision of histories and personalities in a studio
\na collision of values and techniques
\nof humor, communication and needs<\/p>\n

I admire these bodies
\nI respect these bodies
\nI am glad I am not one of these bodies
\nthese bodies are journeying into territory that frightens most
\nthey venture into the unknown
\nthey move into undiscovered language and hip flexion
\nthey make time to hear all of what is being said
\ntime to witness all of what is being seen
\nand include all of what is being created
\naccept what is offered<\/p>\n

the studio does not feel big enough to hold it
\nthe stage deep enough to share the story
\nbut they are making a dance to store the journey and the learning<\/p>\n

I look forward to April<\/p>\n
